| What should this girl have done- accept corporal punishment? Lisa, age 18 is a 12th grade student at a Christian high school and was expected to graduate in May in the middle rank of her class. | I dont really know what to do? I'm the principal at an elementary school. We have guys from Kindergarten to 2nd grade in the school. | First, as others have mentioned, find out if spanking is considered abuse where you live. Find out what your district guidelines require of you; do they require you to report spanking as abuse? If spanking is not abuse, according to the law, and the district doesn't require you to report spanking, then you don't need to. You should be proactive and contact the school board on your own. Let them know what happened, what you've found out in regards to state law and district policy, and ask for their suggestions for follow up. Document everything. Have the kindergarten teacher/assistant fill out a behavior report. Get signed statements from those that witnessed the incident. Print out a copy of the state law and district policy. Keep a copy of any school board communication. And document any follow through action on your part. You may want to have a follow up conversation with the father. Let him know what you found out with regards to the laws and policy regarding spanking. Tell him it's inappropriate to spank at school, and that he needs to keep that kind of discipline in the home. Help him realize that some view spanking as abuse and it may be reported next time. And then fire that secretary. Threaterning to go to the school board if you don't follow her ideals is not professional and not the kind of subserviant behavior you want to have to be worrying about.
